Step into the mesmerizing world of entomological art and advanced printmaking. In this intensive masterclass, renowned artist and Wicked Bugs illustrator Briony Morrow-Cribbs guides you through the delicate fusion of copperplate etching and airbrush aquatint. Together, you will transform the complex, micro-textures of the insect world into hauntingly beautiful, velvety intaglio prints.

What You Will Learn

Airbrush aquatint replaces traditional rosin bags with an atomized mist of acrylic. This tool allows for unprecedented control over tonal gradients. It is the perfect medium for capturing the iridescent sheen of a beetle's wing, the soft fuzz of a moth, or the smooth, armor-like plates of an exoskeleton.

Through live demonstrations and hands-on studio time, you will master:

  • The Atomized Plate: How to set up, maintain, and masterfully control an airbrush for aquatint application.

  • Develop Tone: Creating buttery, continuous-tone gradients and high-contrast chiaroscuro effects that bring invertebrates to life.

  • Insect Anatomy & Texture: Techniques for translating scientific detail into copper.

Who This Is For

This workshop is ideal for printmakers and print curious artists, illustrators, and creatives looking to expand their technical toolkit and break free from current aquatint limitations. Bring your curiosity, your love for the natural world, and a desire to push the boundaries of tone.

Briony Morrow-Cribbs – Biography

Raised on Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound, amidst seaweed and rocky shores, Briony Morrow-Cribbs was eventually lured across the continent by the magic of New England. She landed in southern Vermont in 2014.

Between Washington and Vermont, Briony earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2012, where she also taught etching until 2014. After wrangling college students, she decided to try her hand at high schoolers and joined the faculty at The Putney School. In 2018, she retired from institutional teaching, moved her etching press into a sheep barn, and revived Twin Vixen Press—originally co-founded in 2008 with fellow artist Helen O’Donnell. She now works as an illustrator, graphic designer, and artist.

As a printmaker, Morrow-Cribbs has exhibited nationally and internationally, with solo shows at Davidson Gallery (Seattle, WA), Artisan Gallery (Paoli, WI), Brumfield Gallery (Cannon Beach, OR), and Tory Folliard Gallery (Milwaukee, WI).

Her illustration career launched with two New York Times bestsellers: Wicked Plants: The Weed that Killed Lincoln’s Mother & Other Botanical Atrocities and Wicked Bugs: The Louse that Conquered Napoleon’s Army & Other Diabolical Insects, both written by Amy Stewart. Since then, she’s illustrated Unnatural Creatures (edited by Neil Gaiman and Maria Dahvana Headley), created copperplate etchings for The Anarchist’s Design Book (Lost Art Press), and contributed illustration and cover art to Gory Details and Go to Hell—both from National Geographic.

She currently lives in Dummerston, Vermont, with her husband and their 5-year-old daughter.
