Call for Art: Exhibition Opportunity at the Honolulu Printmakers

The Honolulu Printmakers Grand Opening featured exhibition will highlight print works that utilize both red and black ink. All mediums of print work are encouraged. Please do not frame. Limit your artwork to size 11x14 or smaller. You may offer your prints for sale (a 50/50 split with the Honolulu Printmakers). 

To submit work, please fill out this form online and then send a high res photo to ShellyChoy@aol.com. You may submit up to three pieces and drop your prints off at the Honolulu Printmakers studio in a flat file marked Call for Art: Red and Black. This is not a member only show. Please encourage all of your printmaking friends and students to submit. We want to fill the walls with work and celebrate.

The deadline to submit info and drop-off work is December 5th.

You're Invited: Artist Talk with Amber Coppings and Kainoa Gruspe

Amber Coppings and Kainoa Gruspe have invited members of the Honolulu Printmakers to come and hear them talk about their exhibit “from the dirt and back to the breath” featuring fiber art and natural dye work. The exhibit is currently up at the First Hawaiian Bank Center located at 999 Bishop Street in Honolulu.

The talk will take place on Friday, Dec. 12th 2-3pm at First Hawaiian Bank Center and is limited to 10 people. Please submit your interest in attending so we can create a head count.

Intaglio is BACK! Letʻs get INKY.

Get your creative ideas flowing by working on 3 jewel like copper plates —of the same size. Create a playful series of images that work together to tell a story. You can rearrange them and trade images with classmates to tell a different story.

Example : Bird, Nest, Egg or Leaf, Tree, Water

This class is perfect for anyone. Even if you are totally new to printmaking!

AND this will inspire fresh ideas for experienced printmakers.

This course will focus on the wonderful world of line quality and mark making using the safest intaglio materials and techniques available today. Baldwin Ink Grounds offer traditional results with less toxicity. BIG hard ground offers fantastic benefits over traditional grounds and does not require any toxic materials for clean up. Traditional representational image development as well as abstract experimentation are encouraged in this course. Copper metal plates with traditional plate preparation and ink wiping techniques will be taught. If you have always wanted to try printmaking or have been away from it a while and want to get oriented to using the new HP studio this is a perfect place to start.

Class supplies available for purchase in the HP studio approximate cost is $25 depending on preferred plate size. Copper plates, printmaking papers, and etching tools are available. You have the option to use your own or buy materials from HP. Supply list will be provided on enrollment.

Course includes unlimited studio use during our Open Studio hours for the duration of the course.

Call for Art: Insect Art Show

The Insect Art Show will be held at Honolulu Printmakers’ new 888 Mililani Street location with an opening reception on the evening of October 24, 2025. There is no fee for submitting your art.

The deadline by which we can guarantee consideration of your artwork is October 8. We will provide a response to all submissions received by this date by October 13. Framed artwork can be dropped off during the week of October 24.

Please note: The UH Insect Museum is encouraging the appreciation of insects and the role they play in art. The UHIM has no commercial role, interest, or involvement in this event.

Mokuhanga Traditions and Innovation with April Vollmer

On Friday, September 12th from 6:00 to 7:30pm we will welcome April to lead our first artist presentation at our new studio space in the Kendall Building at 888 Mililani Street (at the corner of Queen and Mililani). She will talk about Mokuhanga, a traditional Japanese water-based woodblock printing. April is an amazing American artist and printmaker from New York. She is the author of the 2015 publication “Japanese Woodblock Printing Workshop”.  Don’t miss this presentation. You can also see some of her work on exhibit at HoMA in the “Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints” exhibit. Her knowledge and experience makes her a printmaking national treasure. We look forward to welcoming her.

A Letter from Our Director, Denise Karabinus

​​​​When I lost my newborn son in January 2013, Honolulu Printmakers became my creative refuge. The compassion, generosity, and space to create were vital for my healing. I had a story to tell, and the cathartic repetition of printmaking processes — mixing ink, tearing paper, rolling brayers, and making thousands of prints — provided the time and space to quietly unfold myself to the world again.

My commitment to Honolulu Printmakers is deeply personal. I took the stewardship of this organization seriously, especially during our most vulnerable moments. We are now in a very different reality than when I took over during COVID.

Our studio is bustling and filled with amazing creative energy. Taking this significant step into property ownership will secure our precious organization and launch our community into the future. We are doubling our size, moving into a safe, light-filled home where our artists and the many lives we touch can truly thrive. Let's take this leap together!

Deep appreciation to everyone involved in this project! 

Through sheer grit and determination we are starting the next chapter in our next 100 year story. With over 500 volunteer hours contributed already, office cubicles have been gutted, carpeting removed, plumbing updated, gorgeous crystal-clear tint applied on windows to show off our awesome view and new floors are installed! 

Three major $50,000 gifts from longtime supporters are on offer to kick start this project. Mahalo to Paul Weisman, Marcia Morse and another anonymous family for helping us get to LIFT OFF!

Our vision to develop the state of the art printmaking studio of our dreams is beginning to take shape. We want YOU to be a part of this story. 

Additional volunteer work days have been announced via email and are added to our website. We need a lot of help and we want everyone to be involved. It is exhilarating to be a part of this. Do not miss out!
