Mokuhanga Woodblock Workshop at Honolulu Printmakers

Instructor: Faith Stone

Location: Honolulu Printmakers, 888 Mililani St. #701 Honolulu, HI 96813

January 29th, 30th, 31st 2027 (3 sessions)

1/29 Friday: 6:00 - 8:00 pm
1/30 Saturday: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
1/31 Sunday: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Technique: Mokuhanga is a beautiful, hands-on printing technique that uses water-based pigments, Carving tools and hand rubbing the print onto Japanese paper rather than using a printing press. It is non-toxic, accessible, and surprisingly easy to continue at home.

In this workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of mokuhanga through a combination of guided printing and hands-on carving. Carving and printing are separate skill sets. We’ll begin by learning to use the carving tools and the opportunity to print from blocks already carved by Faith. This gives participants the experience of creating a collection of finished prints. You’ll then design and carve two woodblocks of your own and learn how to print them using traditional Japanese methods.

No previous experience is necessary. Faith’s goal is to make the process approachable and enjoyable while helping each student develop confidence and proficiency at their own pace.

Supply Fee: $60 - due at the first class gathering can be paid in cash or by card.
