Magic Box of Mysteries

Mystify and mesmerize with this magic box of mysterious toys and tricks! In this workshop you will learn the secrets of this hidden compartment, magic wallet box. Open the magic box to reveal hypnotizing optical paper toys. Then close the box and open again to unveil an entirely different set of paper toys, including a volvelle, flexagon, and thaumatrope.

How does it work, you ask?! Through the magic of book arts, all will be revealed.

Tools: X-Acto knife #11 with extra blades, scissors, bone folder, ruler 12"-24", pencil, cutting mat (or layers of cardboard to protect table). Many of these supplies are available at HP. You may choose to bring your own.

Materials fee: $20 cash paid to Keri at the beginning of class. (Instructor will provide the paper, bookcloth, bookboard, and paper toys)

Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder is a book artist and the proprietor of Coyote Bones Press based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her artist’s books are held in many prominent permanent collections including The Libraryof Congress, Stanford, Harvard, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the British Library. Schroeder has taught workshops and lectured at numerous institutions including Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Maine Media College, Penn State University, Colorado College, and Minnesota Center for Book Arts. She was the Artist in Residence at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University from 2019-2021, winner of the 2022 MCBA Book Arts Prize, and was a recipient of the inaugural Center for Craft Teaching Artist Cohort grant in 2023. In 2026, Schroeder was the invited juror for the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Student Artist Book Competition, and a presenter at the Guild of Book Workers Standards of Excellence Conference.
