Every year since 1933, the Honolulu Printmakers has commissioned a local printmaker to produce an edition of prints that the organization makes available to its members and the public to raise funds for its activities.

The Gift Print Artist for 2026 is Stephen Yuen

ARTIST BIO

A lifelong resident of Hawaii, Stephen Yuen is an architect and urban designer and has recently returned to art and printmaking.  He is a former principal currently serving as Of Counsel at the interdisciplinary design firm G70.

For over 30 years, he has brought his experience and ability to bear on a variety of planning and architectural projects in Hawaii and the Pacific.  His approach is environmentally, culturally, and economically holistic and contextual, and is based deeply on values related to community and the importance of civilized social engagement in any context. 

An interest in placemaking from architecture has led to an ongoing study of the nature of reflection, transparency, and color in the context of places undergoing change. Current work explores the connection between fragments of the natural or built environment, or of living space and household objects, examining notions of familiarity, place, perception and recognition.

Steve Yuen is a recognized printmaker and currently serves as President of the Honolulu Printmakers. His work blurs the lines between art and architecture, utilizing computer modeling software to create digital prints, and pochoir and screen printing to create intricate, layered hand prints.

This year the Gift Print was produced in a limited edition of 50 impressions, with profits from sales going directly to support the work of the Honolulu Printmakers as we continue to establish our new studio. The print is pre-sold sight-unseen until the opening of our annual exhibition, after which the price increases. The first and second impressions are retained for archival purposes to be part of the permanent collection of Honolulu Museum of Art and Honolulu Printmakers. Gift Prints will be available for pick up at the Opening of our Annual Exhibition on April 3rd and in our studio starting on April 7th. Prints will be shipped out to online buyers starting on April 7th.
