"Puʻu Loa" Michael Takemoto

Solarplate etching
4" x 5”

Artist statement:
I've rediscovered the challenges and rewards of printmaking through solarplate etching. I'm working with photographic images of contemporary Hawai'i and print them in a way that invokes the history and culture of the islands.

About the artist:
Michael Takemoto is a visual artist and Associate Professor of Art at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College. Takemoto received a BFA in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa. He earned an MA and an MFA in Studio Art from Northern Illinois University.

Takemoto has exhibited his paintings, murals, sculpture, and installations nationally and at various locations in Hawaiʻi, including the Honolulu Museum of Art, the East Hawaiʻi Cultural Center, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and the Hui Noʻeau Visual Arts Center. In 2003, his work was featured in the 6th Biennial of Hawaiʻi Artists at the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu.
